Nine Essential Hand Planes with Christopher Schwarz
Dates: September 25-September 26

Materials: $20

Hand planes can do so much more than simple trimming chores. Once you fully understand how they work, how to sharpen them correctly, and how
to apply them to the work, you will use them to smooth and trim virtually every surface of your projects. Christopher Schwarz, the author of the new book Handplane Essentials, takes a deep dive into the details of the nine most essential planes of the craft: the jack, jointer, smoother, fillister, plow, shoulder, router, scraper, and block planes. Each plane has its own personality and is sharpened, set up, and used differently. In this two-day class, you'll learn to master these tools so you can use them with complete confidence in your shop at home or work. If you are ready to stop sanding and start getting wicked-tight joinery, this is the class for you. Note that you don't need all nine planes above to take this class. Students should bring what they have, and we'll all share. Also note that you will be given a complete buying guide to these tools with Christopher's recommendations for features and brands. Key points: advanced techniques for wicked sharp; nickers that score cross grain cleanly; how to use bench planes to flatten a board from a rough state; mastering the fillister plane to improve your dovetailing; use the router plane to improve your tenons; how the jointer plane can improve your dadoes; how to plow plane will turn dangerous power-tool setups into child's play; and how to make perfect, gleaming wooden surfaces ready for finishing.
