About This Workshop
Building a rocking chair is a great achievement for woodworkers and this chair is both beautiful in its simple lines and comfortable. It’s a chair someone will want to sit in every day and one that can be passed down to family members. Frank draws on his nearly 30 years of experience working with hand tools and power tools to help students build this chair, all the while teaching valuable woodworking techniques that can be used throughout other areas of woodworking. The skills that Frank teaches will enable students to build a set of dining room chairs. This seven-day class will take participants step-by-step through the process of handcrafting their own Craftsman style rocking chair. Each part of the process is broken down into small, manageable steps so that students can concentrate on mastering one task at a time before moving onto the next. The entire chair is constructed with mortise and tenon joinery. Frank will demonstrate how to cut and chop mortise and tenons both by hand and machines. Students will be taught how to utilize a spokeshave to fair curves as well as how to surface prep the work with planes and scrapers. As a bonus, class members will even learn some basic upholstery as they can choose between leather or fabric for the seat cushion.
